Monster Auction - Flint, MI - Rudely escorted out
« on: February 12, 2011, 10:19:29 PM »
So, a friend of mine and me went to the aution. Open carrying, which I've done there every time I've went. We go in, get a number, look at some stuff. We're there 5 minutes, and a guy who is wearing a "security" shirt and a black leather jacket, come up to us, very excited. Says, "you can't have an open gun in my building!!" Waving his arms at us. We ask if we should conceal, he then asks us to leave. We start walking to the door, he is following my partner so close, he kicked his shoes twice. Finally we're out side, and he asks for out ID's. We both refused. We ask if we can place them in our car and come back, he says no. The whole time going back and forth he's real rude. We explain we know what the laws are and appologized several times, but were very cooperative. Since then, I sent an email to the auction company, and got a real rude response, saying I was permanently banned.

I honestly could care less about going there again, however, I would like to know people's thoughts on a peaceful open carry protest outside. They hold weekly auctions, so its not hard finding a schedule.

Thanks for everyone's input.

God Bless,

Jeff

Seems like if it was the owner, then it's his choice to not allow guns...    no reason to protest really....

Flint, MI is the area.  I would appreciate it, although, I'm not opposed to silent protesting alone.  Of course, my partner would be there too.

Yes, on his private property.  I understand that we were supposed to leave, and were in-fact leaving.  However, once we were stopped at the door, and told we couldn't come back, and treated like criminals, then I started to have an issue.  Also, the guy said he was a sheriff's deputy with Genesee County.  Peeved me, I would bet almost anything he isn't.

One of the reasons I could see, is to reprimand poor treatment.  I firmly believe that it's society's duty, not the government, to correct bad behavior, and educate people on proper actions.  To me, after the email was returned in the manner it was, that's when it's appropriate to take it to another level.  I would never jump right to protests/boycotts first, however, at what point does a person get involved further?  Most people that attend, have no idea they have the attitude they do, and some, I believe, would choose to do business elsewhere if they knew.

Just my thoughts.

Agreed.  He was rude from the start.  In an attempt to not ruffle feathers, I was compliant from the outset.

This is another reason to have a voice recorder with you at all times.
If he claimed to be a deputy and he in fact is not; he could be charged in the incident.
Hind sight is always.... I would have asked to see a badge...given his attitude.

Not too many, if any owners of a large auction would be coming up to any paying customer like that in security uniform. So I would had asked if was the owner, speaking for the owner or is it just his say only. That's because you said you have been their before. Just my in put. Carry On.
Open carry in Detroit

I did ask if it was policy, he said yes, they don't allow guns.  Yet in the email, they say they have no problem with concealed guns.  I take issue with that, being it's very hard to tell to the untrained, if someone is concealing.  Hiding the gun, is after all the point.  He wouldn't let me talk to a manager, owner, or anything.  I'm 99% sure he wasn't the owner.  I've met the owner a couple times, and unless this guy purchased the place, he ain't it.

He was real arrogant about it, especially after we explained that we too are Special deputies.  He blew it off like it was no big deal, I then informed him that our deputizations are very different, as we don't do parades and things like that.  I'm relatively certain that I can get him to claim it again.

"you can't have a gun in MY building" ???? that alone would bring on a bunch of questions and comments. if a deputy i'm guessing reserve otherwise wouldn't be in a security uniform. most departments do not allow working security off duty for full time sworn officers. also OC. no signs about weapons of any kind i assume. wise choice not to present ID either. bad attitude = NO ID.
not sure where this is. is this the fenton auction. used to go there years ago and OC there woudn't think to be a problem.

No, its flint. Robert T, and Dort Hwy. In the world of auctions, they're relatively new, couple yrs.  As I said, I've OC'ed there almost a dozen times maybe.

Still shocks me that property owners get so bent out of shape. I know from personal experience, it is frustrating. If the person to whom you sent an email is not the owner, I would try to contact him/her. If this does not work, though, then it seems you just need to adhere to their "policy" and, since you have been "banned", I would never set foot in that establishment again. Oh... and I would tell everyone that will listen what %#@ they were.
