One such exception allows for transportation of  pistols in a vehicle for a “lawful purpose.”  A  lawful purpose includes going to or from any one of the following:

 A hunting or target area

 A place of repair

 Moving goods from a home or business to
     another home or business

 A law enforcement agency (for a safety
inspection or to turn the pistol over to the agency)

 A gun show or place of sale or purchase

 A public shooting facility

 Public land where shooting is legal

 Private property where a pistol may be lawfully
    used

MCL 750.231a also provides that a pistol transported for a “lawful purpose” by a person not licensed to carry a concealed pistol must be
all of the following:

 Unloaded

 In a closed case designed for firearms

 In the trunk (or if the vehicle has no trunk, it must
not be readily accessible to the occupants)

There is no way to “open carry” a pistol in a vehicle.  An individual, without a CPL or otherwise exempted (e.g., a police officer), who
transports a pistol in a vehicle to an area where he or she intends to “open carry”  may be in violation of MCL 750.227.   ??? ???

"Includes" being the key word. I heard once upon a time the word "includes" was written "is" and then the law changed...?

"Includes" does not "limit to".

"Dosen't this make kinda hard for someone without a CPL to carry?"

I wouldn`t say it makes it hard, just more inconvenient without the CPL.

The CPL not only makes it easier to transport, but allows you to carry in most Pistol Free Zones.

And lets you purchase handguns using the RI-60 form, instead of going to your local PD for a purchase permit.

So "personal protection" is a lawful purpose, but not necessarily included in the verbage of the law... correct?

There is no case law that establishes whether the list is "exclusive" or "inclusive".

So is stopping at the Dairy Queen on the way to the range a lawful purpose?

That would depend on how bad they want you.

A few thoughts:

1. How are they going to know you have a gun in your trunk? Don't give them PC/RAS to search, and don't consent to searches.
2. You certainly aren't going to tell them you have an unloaded pistol in the trunk.

If an officer asks to search, you reply:  "Officer, I'm sorry, I don't consent to searches"

Many traffic stops will have the officer asking if there are any guns in the vehicle, what should a person do in that situation? I am referring to the no CPL, legally stored in the truck carry.

I am not interested in discussing the contents of my personal property officer.
Anything I post may be my opinion and not the law... you are responsible to do your own verification.

Blackstone (1753-1765) maintains that "the law holds that it is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer."

Before I carried, or had a CPL, I never was asked if there were any weapons in the car. Only after I had gotten a CPL and signed the form agreeing to submit my Right to Privacy that I was asked about any weapons.  I find it best to tell the Ociffer "No disrespect Officer but at this time I'm going to Exercise my 4th & 5th Amendment rights"

Contempt of cop isn't a crime. He may not give me a "break" on the ticket -- but meh. Better than him searching my car and finding a joint my teenage nephew may have dropped in it when he borrowed it for prom (it's a sports car -- it's great for prom). Not saying my nephew smokes pot. He might. I don't know.
