Well, I've been OCing for nearly a year now and today was my first verbal acknowledgement/encounter.  I stopped by Meijer in Okemos on the way home from work to pick up a few things. At the self check line the clerk came up to me to key in his code, then as he walked away I asked him if he had a wine tote bag. He came back with one, handed it to me, and turned away. He then turned back again and approached me a third time and said, "Excuse me, what does your shirt say?"  I turned to face him and showed him.  I was wearing this white polo shirt with grey dress slacks.

"Opencarry dot org.  Oh." he said, smiling.  "My niece and her husband just got their concealed licenses, and they let me shoot their snub-nosed 38. That was the first time I shot a handgun."  Yeah, those small revolvers are not the easiest guns to shoot, I say.  Real short sight radius.  He keeps talking about shooting, and I was kinda wishing we were somewhere else so I could unholster mine as a talking point, but I didn't figure coonfingering a loaded Five-seveN in Meijer was a good idea.  But someone came up to him with a question and he left.

I've talked to people in stores and restaurants all over MI and IN before while OCing many times, but either they've not noticed or ignored it.  Walked past LEOs without a word.  This was the first acknowledgement I've ever had.  Which is good. :)

I'll repeat what I wrote here when I was new to this. Thanks to all of you who have gone before and have OCed for years.  You've all made it easier for the rest of us noobs.

Not exactly an OC experience, but more of a 'small world' experience.

Steel Magnolia and I were shooting (figuratively) a wedding, and the groom looked really familiar.

Finally, I had a chance to ask him if he had ever heard of Michigan Open Carry. 'Yes', he says.

Ever been to an event? Turns out he had! Small world.

Travis, if you read this; working on your pics right now. Back-ups to multiple drives is step one. Fireproof and off site!

went out running errands last weekend in brighton. stopped in best buy. as i was walking in a brighton police unit was pulling up to the front of the store. couldn't miss my sig rig (the law giver). i walked in and started shopping. i glanced back at the door to see the officer had stopped and came in and was talking to the staff about something. after about 10 minutes i headed for the door not buying anything. the officer was clearly the door goalee waiting on somebody. i just assumed it was me. walked towards the door and the officer just looked at my holster said "hi" and i continued out the door. wasn't me he was looking for. i was ready, calm, and waiting for whatever he had to say about it but nothing.
was in cleveland last week. while downtown my sister and i checked out a new casino (used to be a dept store where they filmed A CHRISTMAS STORY). while waiting for her i saw a deputy sheriff babysitting the front door looking bored. i asked him about ohio open carry since i had been told many different tales of ohio laws. he said it's the same as michigan. not illegal etc. my nephews both concealed permit holders proclaim it to still be a legal gray area blah blah don't do it blah blah. guess the ohio LEO propaganda machine must be working. i got it from the horses mouth. next time i go i will be armed with not only The Law Giver but ohio law as well. i did not carry at all when we went down as i knew we would be in a casino and their mass transit system has it's usual ohio NO WEAPONS signs posted.
hope everyone had a fun fathers day and hope to see everyone at a picnic or two this summer.

They must not know that city ordances that govern the possession and carry of firearms are unenforceable due to MCL 123.1102, otherwise known as pre-emption, which makes that little star on the sign useless.

Says weapons... of which firearms are but one type.

I OC all the time...Meijer, Wal-mart, Petco, Kroger, Pet Supplies Plus, Bookstores, garage sales, restaurants, Secretary of State, the Mall... almost never any issues or anyone noticing.

Anyways, a few of the other than normal experiences:

Was at a garage sale looking at some stuff for about 10 minutes - no issues, a bunch of neighborhood kids playing in the yard.  As I was getting into my car and leaving one of the kids was saw it and was asking (very loudly for all his friends I'm sure) "Is that a gun?" To which I answered positively, at which point he kept saying over and over "He's got a gun!" - he didn't seem to be scared, but it was obvious he had never seen a civilian carrying before.  I was already getting into my car, so I really didn't bother much with it.

Yesterday at Kroger had one of the baggers ask about my firearm and inquire as to the model etc.  No issues.

Also yesterday was picking up food at the Chinese restaurant and had a fellow approach me and ask about my firearm.  He was from Tennessee, but was living in MI for a while while he worked for GM.  He had lots of questions about OC and said he would have had he known it was legal.  I told him to make sure he knew all the laws first and directed him to this website.  Very nice fellow!  I really wish I had not ran out of tri-folds!!

OC'd all around.. while stopping for smokes at the Speedway on Hall Rd and Romeo Plank two Sheriff Deputy 's were standing outside the gas station. One of them seen my pistol and asked "Exercising your legal rights?" To which I responded "Yes Sir". He stated that more people should do the same.

No issues....

Been OC'ing at my apartment complex. No issues .. I had anticipated some, but the lease didnt say anything about firearms.. :)

I OC'd for my step-son's birthday at Applebees on Tuesday night.  They were PACKED (busier than THEY expected)...understaffed, etc.

While clearing the neighboring table, our waiter bumped into the butt of my handgun.  He apologized for bumping into me...and I said it was just my gun he bumped into.

He asked out of curiosity if I was a copy or a permit holder.  No big deal.

OC'd to several businesses in the Westland/Livonia area, including Westland mall and 7-11, only question was about the Zebra wood handles on my Kimber from the guy behind the counter at 7-11, no issues other than that.

+1 for Hit em here and Riverview recreation!

I go there every so often to reassure myself that I will never be a golf professional, recently I've started OCing there since they are getting used to seeing my face.  I went there last night to use their driving range and hit a few golf balls, OC, as I was leaving I thought that it might be a good place to have an OC meet.

They have driving ranges for the golf fans, batting cages, a putt putt course, they also have an area for go karts and the little bumper car/boats.  I thought it would be a nice place because of the ability for those attending to bring their family along as well.

Like I said I've had my face in there every so often for a year now and I decided to talk to the owner who was there last night about the possibility of having an OC meet up there.  I started talking to her and informed her that I'm a member of MOC and that we have get togethers about once a month, I mentioned that I was carrying and she said she didnt even notice.  She said her husband is a sheriff deputy and her son is also and they both carry a gun and she was interested in getting her CPL and carrying.  We talked about carrying and the reasons for it for a few minutes, shes quite a pleasant person to talk to and seemed very pro gun.

Her husband and her co own the facilities and she said she wouldnt have a problem with it but she would talk to her husband about hosting an OC get together one of these days.

If youre in Battle Creek feel free to stop by Riverview Recreation and Hit em Here, great place, nice people, and pro gun.  I'll definitely continue OCing there.

OC'd to Kohls on a few times recently, not a word said, yesterday however I went to return a shirt I purchased (it was a large and fit like a small after being washed) and to buy a new pair of shoes...while I was paying for my items the young lady at the register asked if I work with the police department. I told her I did not, that I'm just exercising my rights and she replied with "ok, I can dig it" she seemed to find me OCing my pistol as a rather positive sight. Other than that nothing else happened.

Going to be stopping up there probably tomorrow night as well to use my $10 Kohls cash thing they gave me, they've got some decent deals going on right now.

I OCed at the barber shop today and may have two new members for my gun club as a result. The Lady that cuts my hair informed me that the little skinny guy that was in there the last time I was there a month ago became a real problem after I left and she almost had to use her pepper spray on him. It would seem my gun or presence was keeping him in line but that once I left he thought he could hit on her and make inappropriate comments. It is of note that there were other men in the store and they did nothing when she was harassed .

I also OCed in the Panel Room for lunch with no issues as usual!

Both are located in Hartford MI!

Oh and I also found she is looking into getting her CPL and wanted to know if I though a Glock 19 would be a good carry gun. I said as long as she is willing to dress around it she should have no problem. She said that would be fine as she has a scrub jacket on in the shop anyway. I suggested a Kydex OWB holster for CC under her scrub jacket.

I just got back from the Blissfield festival, I OCed there all day. I passed many county sherriffs and security guards and not one word was said.

In fact I talked to one of the sherriffs for about 5 minutes.

I looked for the GB signs as I entered but not seeing any I didn't have to disarm.

On the way home we stopped at Brenda's in Samaria to eat, we eat there often and they do not have with a problem with OC in fact one of cooks had a 2nd ammendment shirt on. All in all a great oc day.

OC'd to Lowe's and Heartland Marketplace in Westland, and Chili's in Canton today. No problems or questions from anyone, but the lady at the checkout at Lowe's would not look me in the eyes once because she was too busy staring at the gun on my hip :)

OC'ed today at Kroger while returning bottles.  Had a mom with 2 young kids on my strong side the whole time and I never noticed her give a second look or even get worried about a MWAG.  Also OC'ed at Auto Zone while getting a light bulb for the g/f's car.  It was another great day of OCing!
