Linda,
Welcome to Michigan Open Carry's Forums. I hope today we give you a good beginning on the education you should have before strapping the gun on and walking out the door. I note you said "my gun" and want to point out that if you do not have a CPL, you have already said one of the most improtant things, it must be a gun registered to you, and not to anyone else. The other portion of your direct question was teh safety inspection, which in Michigan no longer occurs, so do not worry about that. previously in Michigan a police officer had to do a safety inspection on your firearm, that is no longer the case.
Before I direct you to some reading, which will hopefully guide you on your way, keep in mind strapping your gun on your hip is a big step not to be taken lightly and I highly recommend you NOT do it until you are confident you understand all the relevant laws. Once you do, and are all question and answered out, go strap your gun on and walk out the door.
MOC Trifold:
http://miopencarry.org/moc_files/brochure.pdf-Discusses where and why you cannot carry your firearm. If you have a CPL, your freedoms are greatly extended. If you do not have a CPL you are not allowed to carry in the listed Pistol Free Zones, and this includes anywhere licensed to sell alcohol such as a gas station or grocery store. This is your biggest impedement to watch out for.

Once you have completed that homework, and anything else someone else comes up with, come back and ask some more questions. Ask until you are sure. It's a brand new world once you start open carrying and we want you to be prepared.
Have a good one.
