Story is three months old, although I just read it today.
INDIANAPOLIS - An Indianapolis Metro Police officer was sentenced Friday after he was found guilty of stealing from drivers during traffic stops.
A jury found Officer David Butler guilty of charges of robbery and official misconduct. He was suspended from IMPD pending termination.
Butler was sentenced to eight years in prison. Four years will be executed, with three in the Department of Corrections and one year in home detention; the other four years are suspended, with one year probation.
Butler will also have to do 80 hours of community service while on probation, and the judge requested that the community service be in the Latino community.
Butler must also pay $2,700 in restitution.
One of Butler's victims told Eyewitness News that $700 went missing from his wallet after Butler demanded it during a traffic stop.
An Eyewitness News report found that since joining the force in 1988, Butler was disciplined nine times and suspended without pay for a total of 78 days. He was suspended six times in the last five years and has six violations for neglect of duty, including sleeping on the job and repeatedly showing up late for duty.
