Resolution of Stand your Ground laws in michigan!
« on: September 16, 2013, 02:14:16 PM »
On Wednesday, the Washtenaw County Commission will be considering a resolution asking the legislature to get rid of "stand your ground" type laws.

Here is the resolution - http://www.ewashtenaw.org/government/boc/agenda/bd/year_2013/2013-09-18bd/9-18-13%20Stand%20Your%20Ground%20Resolution.pdf

As an open carrier, and a man that wants to protect himself and his family - I'd like to have a get-together of open carriers / gun owners that can attend this event in opposition to this..

Would anybody care to join when they present this to the council?

I am unsure at this moment where this is, but I will update the thread when i find out.

Is anybody else going to be here? So far I only have 2 people, and we really could use the support

It's been posted on Facebook several times.  That may generate some traffic (though It's hard to tell how much -- we have many more likes than MIC4L).

I will be +1 if I go.

As you may or may not know, they've withdrew the discussion of the Resolution of Michigan's Self Defense Act (http://www.ewashtenaw.org/government/boc/pub_notices/stand-your-ground-resolution-pulled-from-board-agenda), and the meeting is supposedly going to happen on October 2nd

I'll keep you guys up to date, but be prepared to attend again if this gets put back on the agenda!

I'd also like to point out, if it hasn't been brought up elsewhere already, that the original resolution also includes support for killing premption (PA 319 of 1990)

The repeal of SYG is back on the Washtenaw Board of Commissioner's Agenda for Oct. 16, 2013

http://www.ewashtenaw.org/government/boc/agenda/bd/year_2013/2013-10-16bd

Here is the resolution.  PA 309 is Stand Your Ground and PA 319 is State Preemption!  They are also calling for the expansion of gun-free zones and the restriction of high capacity magazines and other firearms.

http://www.ewashtenaw.org/government/boc/agenda/bd/year_2013/2013-10-16bd/9-18-13%20Stand%20Your%20Ground%20Resolution.pdf

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners calls upon the Michigan State Legislature and Governor Snyder to repeal Public Act 309 of 2006 and Public Act 319 of 1990; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners call upon the Michigan State Legislature to adopt common-sense gun regulations such as improved background checks, strengthened gun-free zones, and limits on the sale of high-capacity magazines; and

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, this resolution shall be transmitted to Governor Rick Snyder, Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, State Senator Rebekah Warren, Speaker of the House Jase Bolger, State Representatives Jeff Irwin and Adam Zemke, and to members of the Michigan House and Senate Judiciary Committees.

Sounds like the school millage proposals...

Keep putting it on a ballot over and over until the opposition is worn down to get it passed.

I would love to attend, but unfortunately unable :(

I got the distinct impression their minds are made up and they care nothing about what the little people tell them.  The only way to potentially slow that down, overwhelm them with numbers, especially local voters.  Where are the Washtenaw clubs in showing up?

Well I will be there tomorrow, and I am reaching out to all others to be there with me. Personally I feel the county board is over reaching it's mandate as this proposal would have statewide effect, not just the county they were elected to run. Besides the fact it's just a dumb idea to begin with ;) So who else will take up the fight with me?

For all of you attending the Washtenaw County Commissioners meeting to voice your opinion...

Be sure to speak during the Citizen Participation section of the meeting, otherwise it will not be recorded. Everything that we say, may go unaccounted for like last time if we mistake the "pre-meeting citizens participation" for the actual thing.

You can watch the last meeting here - and you will see that it was not recorded. Let's try not to let that happen again.
