Patients who want to qualify for medical marijuana in Illinois would have to give up their right to own a gun.

That's bull.

Why should smoking pot disqualify gun ownership? Should you also disqualify if you own shot glasses or have a pint of liquor in the cabinet?

So basically, Illinois residents may soon be given the opportunity to trade one of their most important constitutional rights to engage in illegal activity.  Sounds like the gun grabbers are so eager to get weapons out of the hands of the public that they are actually willing to give us weed in return.  It’s really not a surprising little scheme considering the current state of affairs – give us your guns and you can smoke all the pot you want!  You’ll be up a creek without a paddle when it comes time to defend yourself, but seeing as you’re high as a kite, I guess that’ll ease the blow. —– (H/T – MrConservative.com)

A pothead's dream come true. I'd be willing to bet that even fozzy71 would jump on this.

well tehcnically when you purchase a firearm and do the paperwork one of the questions asks about illegal drugs. in the feds eyes pot is illegal. imho users shouldnt be able to purchase guns legally anyways. same with MI and CPL the gun board can deny if you have a medical card.

Hmmm...
Maybe I could leave my guns in Michigan and move to Chicago for a little while.

How about if you drink alcohol once a week. Should you be able to own guns? If so, how is that different?

By most objective measures, alcohol is worse -- certainly more addictive.

With the legalization of recreational sale and use in Colorado and Washington, other states will follow.

alcohol is not a classed controlled substance such as pot

So because the FDA says something is bad, that must make it so -- even if Obama himself has said pit is less dangerous than alcohol?

Guess what -- the EPA says lead is bad. Should we stop shooting?

Your argument of "because the federal government said so" doesn't hold water :(

Maybe you should have listened when we told you to not talk to the police and never consent to searches. That'll teach you.  ;D

Fed officers don't generally patrol MI highways.

Also -- I was arguing morally. Morally why shouldn't a pot user be able to own guns?

that is true phil. morally sure, if someone wishes to use pot they should be able to still own guns. as for carrying or handling when high. i cannot agree with that being a "safe" practice.

in michigan its pretty much a choose one or the other.

my friend who has a MMC was denied his CPL renewal due to it.

Your attorney would still be able to fight the admissibility of evidence obtained subsequent to the search. They can't just detain a person and wait for a dog to do a search. There still needs to be PAS and PC. Especially for a federal agent to effect a traffic stop.

we can go through hypothetical situations all day. my experiences drugs and guns dont mix. i would not recommend a drug user owning firearms. thats just my personal view. and has no bearing on the law or anything going on in illinois

Ok. So a pot smoker can have guns, just put them away before getting high?
