I'm not sure the scope of their maintenance. Could be a complete overhaul. I know, given the customization done here, it'd take some time to upgrade SMF on our Forum.

They are a volunteer org too...

Agreed, significant upgrades *can* take a while. However, there are also preparations you can do to significantly reduce the actual downtime.

They are already in touch. There was even an agenda item about them on our last leadership meeting. Perhaps we can actually get to that agenda item if one, or even both, were to show up. :)

Yeah, he wanted me to improve the backup situation right now, but I still have yet to get creds.

MGO was switching servers. that requires a full data backup, then move everything over and reload the data. its not a over night thing and they probably wanted to make enough time alloted for the move.

Static content is easy. Then you send over a dump with some relatively current data. Load that up and/or test any conversion that needs to be done. Get the process for that down. THEN toss into mx mode, do a final data sync, convert as needed, dns changeover, done.

Then again, I've also planned these things out for $$$ customers as well.

A week was scheduled in case something went wrong. Four versions of vbulliten to be installed, then customization once vb is up to date. It won't take a week, I guess up sometime Wednesday

Upgrades should never take a week.  Clone the server offline, perform the upgrade.  Take notes.  Rinse and repeat.  Eventually, you will have a "playbook" to perform an upgrade, know all the steps, know exactly how long it will take, and finally, you will know if something isn't going right.

With a scale of hundreds of thousands, I have one chance to get it right.  I never want the first time to be that one chance.

There are ways to do incremental transfers, even down to the transaction level. ;)

Oh, you mean XtraBackup? ;)

We've ran benchmarks, and XtraDB itself smokes vanilla InnoDB in many circumstances.

I was thinking either MySQL or MS-SQL replication.

According to the FB page, the VB updates have to be done one by one in sequence.

Eh.. yeah... I guess that's a way to do it. Wouldn't be my preferred way, but it would work if done properly.
