Just looking at the map I know the article will contain miss truths.  In Michigan you need a permit to open carry.  It's called the purchase permit.

Purchase from FFL still requires a Pistol Sales Record. (RI-060)
The problem with maps like that is that unlicensed people might think they can bring their handguns to MI and the authorities will be OK with that. They never color code those maps for "this state discriminates against non-residents".
