Panera Asks Customers Not To Bring Guns Into Its Restaurants

While the request is new, Panera plans to continue to follow state and local laws regarding firearm policy. The chain also won't ask employees to enforce the new request or place signs about it in its restaurants.

Thanks folks a list to write letters to once back in the states. The fun part is telling  the  size of the family and we teach our kids why we do things. That  makes five kids that will have historical personal reasons not to do business with them. -Michael

 "We're simply respectfully requesting that people leave their guns at home," he added. "It's that simple."

The move nods to why people choose to dine at Panera—essentially to catch a breath and mellow out, Shaich said. To date, the chain hasn't had any material issues with firearms at its stores, he added.

I guess this isn't a 'material issue'.

After Dan and I picked up on that, the thought did occur to me that he probably meant that legally armed customers had not caused any trouble, and either didn't make it clear that's what he meant, or reporters misquoted him.

David Codrea points out that a Panera manager was charged in one armed robbery.
So, if we leave our guns at home, how does Panera propose to protect us from their store managers?

There’s no obvious date on the story, but an apparently related one from August, 2013 said a Panera Bread store manager and her boyfriend were charged.
Then there was a Panera Bread armed robbery in 2012.
How corporate intends to protect its customers from these types of incidents, particularly the ones involving its own management employees, remains unstated.

@OP

I don't think we can call their actions bullying anymore than our own actions when we blackball a gun shop for banning OC.
