Title: Spam posts
Post by: gryphon on August 10, 2018, 07:41:36 PM
We get a fair amount of spam posts and it seems they've been increasing lately.  The MOC forum has been getting several (or more than several) new accounts every day.  A few days later they come back and post ads for sex toys, DVDs, Adidas, stereo equipment, personal slaves (not sure how that works, might need to check that out myself), and so on.  I delete them and the new account as soon as I see them, but even though I check several times a day, sometimes you see them first.

Feel free to still report them if you want.  I just wanted to let you know that we are not ignoring them.  Sometimes you just see them first.  Thanks.

My bookmark for this forum is Show unread posts since last visit.

If you start there, you'll probably find the ads for Butt Plugs faster than you could by checking for reported posts.

Seems like the garbage is all this forum gets these days.

Did everybody move over to ZuckerBook?

Yes, 99.9% of the MOC traffic is on MOC's facebook group.

Yes unfortunately most did.
They seem to forget some of us have been members for a very long time and since this is where communication started, it is just rude to demand everybody use bookface.

I don't know that anybody's demanding you use a web site established by one of our self-declared enemies, they just went there, because, well, that's what everybody does these days, for reasons far beyond my comprehension.
I don't know how it overtook and replaced Instagram and Myspace, but it's now how people communicate.
If you want to talk to them, you go where they are, because expecting them to come back to the forum apparently isn't working.
This is a problem for me, because I want nothing to do with the House of Zuck.

Sometimes I'll drop my filters and visit this facebook page to view the latest sale flyer, but that's the only thing I ever do there:
https://www.facebook.com/rivesqualitymeats/
(store made sausage for $1.49, NY Strip for $2.49-4.29, I buy 30lb when it's under $3)

Couple weeks ago I was accosted by the world's friendliest beagle in the road out in front of my house.
Put found ads on Lansing and BC Craigslist, and called animal control to give them my phone number.
Got a CL response from the moderator of a facebook lost pets group.
I emailed her back, told her to let me know if she heard of anybody missing a beagle.

A week later, that moderator forwarded a facebook post to me. She was kind enough to send a screencap instead of just a link.
My neighbor's son's girlfriend had lost a beagle and was feeling sad a week after it was missing for a week, so she put a pic of it on her facebook page. It was the dog I'd found.

I called her, she said it had slipped its collar three houses away from me while she was caring for her sick boyfriend.
She showed up with a collar in one hand and a bag of treats in the other. Her first act was to put the collar on the dog and adjust it tighter. I checked her facebook page and a couple of people had quoted my CL ad in response to her post. Several people emailed me through CL on her behalf that morning, after I'd called her to come get her dog.

Don't know why she didn't say anything in public about losing the dog until it was missing for a week. I thought the dog was excited to see me when we first met, but that was nothing compared to when it saw its owner a week later.

I guess seeing most of the communication for members stop "unless you go to bookface", I feel that is a demand.
Either follow us or leave.

We get dozens, sometimes hundreds, of posts per day on our facebook group page (which you have to join and be approved).  Facebook is orders of magnitude more active than this forum ever was.  I also lament it.  I think the forum is superior, but these days people use facebook.

Also, all the new events are posted there.  They used to be posted both places, but not anymore.  We have many events throughout the year, many each month sometimes, and they are no longer posted here.  We have several upcoming picnics in mid-Michigan and one in the UP.  Finally, we're back in the UP again!  Plus we've just scheduled a lunch near Grand Rapids.  If you are a paid member of MOC you get the newsletter so you know about those.  If you are not a paid member and don't read facebook, you probably do not.

You can't stop the signal.

Look at the two most active organizations in the US today: Florida Carry and Open Carry Texas.  Both use facebook because most people are on facebook.  Don't be surprised if this forum goes away one day.  I don't know anyone who is advocating to keep it other than me.

Many of the members that refuse to use bookface, have already left this organization. Why be a member of something you are beg for information?

Like our parents used to say, if everybody jumped off a bridge...………….

You can't stop the signal.

But Facebook can stop our signal, and probably will, eventually, now that we've become dependent upon them.

Like SuperTrucker might say, @*&% Zuckerberg, and may Facebook go bankrupt and die.

I absolutely hate facebook.  The only reason I created an account there is because Line 6 chooses that as the avenue to reach their current and potential customers.  Then Michigan Open Carry embraced facebook.  On MOC's worst day, our facebook group gets one hundred times as many post views as does this forum on our best day.

You can't stop  the signal.

But if the House of Zuc can block MrGunsnGear for posting about a military hero receiving a medal, anybody (or possibly any group) can be blocked for anything.

The writing has been on the wall for a long time, but as I said why bother with a organization that you are forced to beg for information?
I've been at the meh point for a while now, if they feel supporting bookface to make sure they can reach billions of people (to bad the membership numbers do not reflect that) then that is their decision.

I don't know if you are still a paid member or not, but if you are you get the monthly newsletter that keeps you pretty well informed, and also make sure you have signed up for the MOC email updates.  Late breaking news and important info is also sent out that way too.

I used to visit this forum just about every day.  Now I stop by twice a month or so.  Thanks to gryphon and Citizens have rights for keeping on posting and keeping it cleaned of spam.  I'm not a fan of Facebook and don't have an account under my name.  I don't want people I didn't talk to in high school looking me up 45 years later wanting to "chat".    With my last name if anyone wants to find me they can ... I just don't need to have them "stumble upon" me or get a "You might know Glenn" link on FB.    I did create a FB account for a wedding joke years ago and that account joined the MOC page but I seldom post or like anything.  FB is a huge time waster and I need to spend my time working.

I am saying to keep it also.
As was posted just a couple of posts after this quoted one, Facebook may take away the signal, meaning to me, they may do what they are doing to other conservative groups and block their accounts.

Another reason I despise facebook.

Agreed but this forum will ever get the traffic that our Facebook page gets.  And Facebook brings in new people.... it is hard to get people to this forum.

I have been a paid member since 2010 and still are for the moment.
As you are the only one that answers questions here I will ask you, why since I do receive the newsletter and emails did I have to ask (in the members area, after the election) last month who ran for what positions in the election? I would think that should be priority information to provide to members. This is not a knock towards you, but an honest question.

I did put it in the newsletter. :)  But agreed, the board should post vital member stuff here at least.  I'm not a member of the board but I think I have privileges which would allow me to start posts in that area.

The thing about facebook is that it brings the posts to you in one central location, you don't have to visit various social forums and websites (news, manufacturers, etc.) to see them.  Sign up for what you want and it's all delivered to your doorstep. The bad thing about facebook is that it's, well, facebook.

For future reference where was the election information in the newsletter (so I don't miss it next time)? I just skimmed over May, June, July and still do not see it?

June 2018--annual member mtg announced pgs. 8 and 9
July 2018--annual member mtg announced pg. 9
Aug 2018--election results pg. 5

2018 MOC Elections email sent to all members June 25, 2018
2018 MOC Elections Nominations Closing email sent to all members June 29, 2018
2018 MOC Elections Voting Open email sent to all members July 5, 2018

The emails discussed in detail the bylaws regarding office and nominations, voting, nominating procedure, offices open, duties of each office, bios of people running, the discussion/question of candidates (open Q&A both online and via email), voting eligibility, and open electronic ballot (if you weren't attending the meeting in person).

It was pretty detailed for months and months.

Why be a member of something you are beg for information?

Members are inundated with information, so much so that some people begin ignoring it.

Notices are sent out regarding every court case or decision, event, opinion, or problem.  If you want to attend the Board Meeting online, our finances are detailed out to the penny each month.  This is not something we publish to the outside world, though, but as an MOC member you are welcome to attend.  It's only one hour once a month online.

The meetings are impossible to attend for those with a job, so i gave up on that years ago. Think trucking industry and cell service coverage and you will understand why I still say meetings on a week day are a bad idea.
The last MOC election I went to, the board decided to parade Cindy Gamrat on a picnic table as the greatest helper we would could have, I am sure you know how that worked out.

What did Gamrat actually do wrong, besides fornicate (as if no other politician ever did that) and fail to lick Snyder's boots (likely the real reason Schuette tried to prosecute her)?

The bios are here (as stated in the email of June 29):

https://www.facebook.com/groups/MOCelections2018/

The email of June 29 stated (highlights mine):

In order to read the Q&A for those running for each open position, you may choose from the following options.

The first option is a closed Facebook group specifically for paying members to discuss candidates. click link to request access it may take several hours for access to be granted.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/MOCelections2018/

... feel free to ask the candidates questions or simply read their bio to learn about them. NOTE this year we will not have an election topic on the MOC forums as we have in the past, all bios and Q&A will be through the elections Facebook page.

The second option is To email your questions to elections@miopencarry.org with who your question is directed to and it will be posted to the elections Facebook page on your behalf. Once the candidate replies to your question a committee member will forward you the reply.

Yes I've seen all that.
Thank you for being patient, but I still have no idea where the people who ran for the election were listed (bios).
I see they are on bookface, but as we have beaten to death not everybody uses bookface. For those that do not use bookface they could have been written on the moon as we would have had the same ability to see them there.

I see option 2 says to send an email with your question and who it is directed at to x@board.com. This is the problem I am still having. I do not use bookface and since I do not how can I direct a question to a person that I have zero idea who they are?

Now were are on the same page.

I gave up arguing about the meetings being impossible to attend a long time ago, but this is a little ridiculous.
I can guarantee that all paid members don't use the forum or bookface.
I understand you are not a board member and want to thank you for trying to explain the situation and allowing me to vent.

Super Trucker, I'm doing my best to keep every member informed via the monthly newsletter that I write.  If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email me or tell me here or get your thoughts to me in some way.  Constructive suggestions help me and everyone else.  Thanks!
