http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/helicopter-armed-police-dogs-arrive-6143466

"Police sent a helicopter, an armed response unit and dog handlers to a late-night report of a man brandishing a weapon – to find a gardener using a rake."

"Wayne Dodd had been helping friend Stephen Hogan with some landscaping when they noticed the helicopter circling."

"Stephen said: 'All of a sudden there was a lot of commotion. My wife Alison looked outside and saw about five police cars, armed officers and dogs.'"

"'They came to the door saying someone had a weapon.'"

Where did they find armed officers?

I like the last paragraph:

Last week police in Aldershot, Hants, sent armed officers and a helicopter to intercept a man reported to be armed with a shotgun on a bridge - he was actually carrying two didgeridoos.

Just so everyone doesn't have to google it.

Aren't "Armed Response Units" as common over there as "S*W*A*T" are over here, and likely more common than police helicopters?

No they aren't unless you are down south in the larger cities and even than they are not common. This just goes to show the level of fear that the media has gotten folks to believe in this rather "interesting" country called the UK. One of many reasons to leave.

So if somebody wanted to perpetrate a school massacre in a sleepy little village in the USA, the police are only minutes away, but in the UK, farmers with shotguns are only minutes away, and armed cops will be there within the hour?

Yes, but the farmers with shotguns will NOT come to your aid as the law in the UK WILL find them in violation of law for stopping a criminal with deadly force (this has happened in the UK). Like I said one of the many reasons to leave this backward island, great people for the most part but the government is totally screwed. Though the criminal can state how unfair his childhood and up bringing where and get a reduced sentence for it. Though one good point is you can get away with murder here as a veteran of the services PSTD allows you get away with some pretty nasty stuff and just get a hand slapped or going to a talk therapy and social therapy. Like I said completely screwed up country.

I remember what happened to Tony Martin, but could you really get a conviction for ending a school shooting?
