Patients who want to qualify for medical marijuana in Illinois would have to give up their right to own a gun.

That's bull.
Why should smoking pot disqualify gun ownership? Should you also disqualify if you own shot glasses or have a pint of liquor in the cabinet?
-
So basically, Illinois residents may soon be given the opportunity to trade one of their most important constitutional rights to engage in illegal activity. Sounds like the gun grabbers are so eager to get weapons out of the hands of the public that they are actually willing to give us weed in return. It’s really not a surprising little scheme considering the current state of affairs – give us your guns and you can smoke all the pot you want! You’ll be up a creek without a paddle when it comes time to defend yourself, but seeing as you’re high as a kite, I guess that’ll ease the blow. —– (H/T – MrConservative.com)
A pothead's dream come true. I'd be willing to bet that even fozzy71 would jump on this.
ETA: Mods stand-by for the "report"

well tehcnically when you purchase a firearm and do the paperwork one of the questions asks about illegal drugs. in the feds eyes pot is illegal. imho users shouldnt be able to purchase guns legally anyways. same with MI and CPL the gun board can deny if you have a medical card.
-
Hmmm...
Maybe I could leave my guns in Michigan and move to Chicago for a little while.

How about if you drink alcohol once a week. Should you be able to own guns? If so, how is that different?
By most objective measures, alcohol is worse -- certainly more addictive.
-
With the legalization of recreational sale and use in Colorado and Washington, other states will follow.
-
alcohol is not a schedule 1 controlled substance such as pot, according to the DEA
-
alcohol is not a classed controlled substance such as pot
So because the FDA says something is bad, that must make it so -- even if Obama himself has said pit is less dangerous than alcohol?
Guess what -- the EPA says lead is bad. Should we stop shooting?
Your argument of "because the federal government said so" doesn't hold water :(
-
true but if i get pulled over by a fed officer and i have a 5th im my car thats not opened i will be fine. if i have a ounce of pot im going to jail to possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance

Maybe you should have listened when we told you to not talk to the police and never consent to searches. That'll teach you. ;D
-
lmao thanks tom! i generally dont speak to police, and never consent to a search.
and if i did have pot and said i dont consent, chances are they would say something along the lines of
"we'll see how smart you are when the k-9 comes" then ur screwed if you have pot in your car
-
Fed officers don't generally patrol MI highways.
-
Also -- I was arguing morally. Morally why shouldn't a pot user be able to own guns?
-
that is true phil. morally sure, if someone wishes to use pot they should be able to still own guns. as for carrying or handling when high. i cannot agree with that being a "safe" practice.
in michigan its pretty much a choose one or the other.
my friend who has a MMC was denied his CPL renewal due to it.

Your attorney would still be able to fight the admissibility of evidence obtained subsequent to the search. They can't just detain a person and wait for a dog to do a search. There still needs to be PAS and PC. Especially for a federal agent to effect a traffic stop.

we can go through hypothetical situations all day. my experiences drugs and guns dont mix. i would not recommend a drug user owning firearms. thats just my personal view. and has no bearing on the law or anything going on in illinois

Alcohol is a drug.
-
i agree, for that reason when i am consuming this "legal" drug i leave my firearms put away.

Ok. So a pot smoker can have guns, just put them away before getting high?
-
it will go back to the 4473 you fill out when you buy a gun from a store. one question asks about illegal drug use, since its a fed form pot falls under such illegal drug.
personally idc what people do as long as they arent endangering me or my family.

Again, you're talking about Federal law. I'm talking about morality/"should" they be able to own guns?
What if they bought the gun used? They never filled out 4473.
What about if they didn't use when they bought the gun but do now?
I'm talking about morality here -- not laws.
-
i guess people will do what they want anyways. i can see both sides of this. my opinion would pick one, pot or guns.

Then pick alcohol/guns as well?

+1
"Guns in the safe or booze in the cabinets -- pick one."
-
i suppose so. they have rights much like we all do. if they lie on forms or purchase a gun knowing they arent supposed to have, thats on them not me
-
Legal Pot, Illegal pot, both easy as hell to get.
I definitely feel that people drinking with a firearm on them is way more dangerous than someone high off pot with a firearm. I would take sitting with baked out guy with a 1911, over drunky with a knife.

People are so concerned about smoking dope and homos getting married that guns will be illegal before long, stay tuned.
