Michigan doesn't have party registration except for party or public elected officials. People are probably asked what party they associate with.

I chatted with a twp supervisor once who was clearly a R, yet he ran as a D. Both party's had approached him to run, but he had to do it as a D. Republican "club" who had to approve candidates was pissed that he won, and worked very hard to trash his reputation.
