OC at Kettering University in Flint?

I have to attend several classes in the coming weeks at KU in Flint. I am aware of the Oc exemption w/CPL law, but are there any other provisions Im not aware of that would prevent me from OC while attending classes there? Is KU a private, or public facility, or is it posted as no weapons allowed etc? Being that it is in Flint, I fully intend to  carry by whatever means are legal while there. Just wondering if anyone can provide any further insight, as I really dont feel like getting arrested or harrassed.

OK, I have made a couple phone calls, first to MSP. There is no state law that they were aware of that would criminalize weapons on the campus, although she did say that campuses and universities feel they are exempt from the pre-emption law, and thus typically have policies prohibiting weapons.

I then called Kettering, and spoke with the Head of Security who informed me that they did not allow weapons, and they are a private college and can make such rules. I asked what measures were in place to ensure my safety both in the classroom, and to and from my vehicle. His answer was that they do not allow weapons. I told him that policy seemed to work well for the students who were victims of armed robbery on campus. I will be utilizing the campus security escort to and fromthe parking areas. Sincethey have assumed responsibiiity for student safety, tehyre gonna earn their paycheck. I will also be writing a letter to the dean.

I sent this letter to the President of Kettering University in Flint. To date, he has no so much as acknowleged it with a response. I think I will look him up while Im there.

Dear Mr McMahan, 

 

I would like to take a moment to ask for your consideration in changing your campus firearm policy. Being that Flint is considered one of the most dangerous cities in America,

your policy of banning firearms does little to prevent students from being victims of criminal activity. I have attached Michigan State Police Legal Update # 86, which exxplains Michigan Firearm law, including the legal ability of those who possess a Concealed Pistol License to be able to openly carry  defenseive firearms on campuses. In further conversation with MSP Legal Dept I was assured that there are no laws prohibiting such. Being that Kettering University is a privately held campus, you have the ability to prevent law abiding citizens from having the means of personal protection, by your policy banning weapons on campus. This is unfortunate, as we well know criminals knowingly target areas they can expect no resistance. Campus shootings, as well as robberies and sexual assaults nationwide prove this to be true.

 

I would respectfully ask that you reconsider your policy, and allow those who are properly trained and licensed by the state of Michigan, or via reciprocal agreements, to continue to be able to exercise their God-given and Constitutionally guaranteed rights to self defense and to bear arms if need be to do so.

 

I have several classes I will be attending at your campus in the coming future through the Michigan Small Business Technology Development Center. While I am looking forward to these classes, I am more than a little apprehensive about safety concerns while in the City of Flint. I am a retired firefighter, US Navy veteran, and licensed by the State of Michigan as a Concealed Pistol License holder. I only ask that my ability to protect myself not be prohibited while attending classes on your campus.

 

I would welcome the opportunity to have a discussion with you concerning this issue, should desire. There is much more to say than can be reasonable put into an email.
