HB 5574, the Michigan Firearms Act but commonly called the "Parking Lot Bill," would expand the rights of gun owners by prohibiting employers, businesses, and state service agencies from prohibiting employees and patrons from storing a firearm in his or her vehicle while in an employer's or business's parking lot.

Some people are against this bill because they believe it infringes on the private property rights of business owners. Others are for this bill because they believe that we have an inherent and constitutionally protected right to self-defense. This includes the commute between work and home. A business parking lot storage ban means leaving it home entirely. They believe that this bill is not onerous and places no undue burden on businesses. Furthermore, the private property of a business is not the same as the private property of a homeowner, for example, and the government currently does not treat them the same. Some people, however, see no distinction between the two.

Please vote in the poll above and let us know your opinion of this bill.
